Respected SCL Vista Team Member Jon Seymour Dies After Battle with ALS

Beloved Team Member, Veteran Spent Last Years Enjoying Life with Family

Jon Seymour, former industrial products and services consultant in our SCL Vista office, has died after a years-long battle with ALS.

After two-and-a-half years with the company, Jon left SCL in September 2019 to travel with his family following his diagnosis. He credited the decision to wanting to “enjoy life as long as I can” in an email to the SCL team at the time.

“Jon was an incredible person, and even though he was only here for a relatively short time, he left quite an impression on all of us. This is a hard loss for everyone,” said SCL General Manager Travis Becktel. “Like many of us at SCL, his fidelity to our country called him to serve. Jon brought a smile to the office every day. We will miss his spirit dearly and hope that we can honor his legacy by exemplifying his character, embracing the beauty of our outdoors, and honoring the ideals our country stands for.”

Jon brought 15+ years of sales and marketing experience from a variety of manufacturing and medical device sales positions. He worked for Callaway Golf in Carlsbad for nearly 12 years, serving both in the research and development, and quality control departments. He also served honorably for six years as a U.S. Marine, earning the Navy Achievement Award with Valor after combat service in the Gulf War.

A snowboarding instructor at Big Bear Ski Resort, Jon loved participating in community and athletic events, including local 5k races he encouraged his SCL team to join. He was also an avid hiker and a loyal Raiders football fan.

Perhaps his favorite part of working with SCL customers, recalls Becktel, was by far the opportunity to get up close and personal with manufacturers in the craft beer market.

“When I would ask him about his day prospecting he was always more excited to talk about the latest craft beer he had tasted from a fresh batch or some product yet to be released,” Becktel said. “He was the reason we joined the Craft Beer Association and ran in the Vista 5K Brewery Run. I think that’s a big reason why he was so excited to work with us.”

In honor of Jon, SCL has donated in his name to Augie’s Quest, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to finding a cure for ALS in our lifetime.
